1) Why should I own a generator?

Experiencing an extended outage for over 24 hours can become inconvenient, unhealthy and can also be costly. With a quality backup generator (Cummins Onan) you can be safe and comfortable by having the essentials like running water, refrigerator, freezer, hot water, heat, lights and cooking appliances.

2) What size of generator do I need for my home?

The size of your home does not necessarily determine what size of generator you should own. Sizing of a generator starts with what is required to meet your power needs.

We take time with you to explain the system and how it works and then discuss with you the power circuits that are essential for you to be comfortable. We calculate the load demand, size the generator then assess the site for installation and design the system to suit.

We custom design, we do not sell pre packaged systems, so you are never limited - the systems are expandable.

3) Who should I get to install a generator at my home or business?

The homeowner should not attempt to specify and install a power system. In all cases, they should contract a Cummins Onan dealer and/or certified technicians.

A qualified electrician is required to perform 90 percent of the work and you will also need a qualified gas fitter to perform any gas piping and gas related connections for systems that are fuelled by propane or natural gas. Both trades will be required to obtain the necessary permits and have their work inspected. There will be trenching required to lay cables and in many cases a concrete base will need to be formed and poured.

Edwards Electric can provide all the necessary people for a professional and above-standards installation.

If you choose to use your own trades to install the system, we can assist by visiting your installation site to review what needs to be done and answer any questions in order to help with a smooth and seamless installation. As an authorized dealer, we will be required to commission the system and register it for warranty purposes prior to putting it "in service".

4) What do I have to do to prepare for the generator installation?

Not much - Edwards Electric does a turn-key installation including: arranging all trades required, site prep, concrete bases, delivery and placement, trenching, connections and final commissioning and registration.

5) Will the generator require servicing and maintenance? If so, how often and who would provide this service?

Yes. A generator, like a car, should have regularly scheduled maintenance and service performed on it. We recommend at least once a year, but based on run time hours accumulated the unit may require maintenance more often than once a year. We provide full service and will arrange a maintenance schedule for your generator. We also winterize generators for those who only use their dwellings in the warmer seasons.

Cummins Onan generators and engines are supported by the largest and best-trained worldwide certified distributor/dealer network in the industry. That means that when you need help, a Cummins Onan distributor/dealer is nearby. This extensive network makes it easier to get genuine Cummins Onan parts, quality service, and expert installation assistance when and where you need them.

6) Are Cummins Onan generators quiet?

It would be difficult to find a quieter home standby generator in the same class.

As a dealer of Cummins Onan home standby generators, we have learned that the enclosures are seriously engineered to operate at the lowest noise level possible for the specific unit’s size. Sound attenuated padding is installed in all the critical areas of the generator housing, so the decibel levels are lower than "acceptable".

The New RS 12000 home standby generator (12 KW) has a decibel rating of 64dBa at full load!

7) How much does a generator system cost to purchase and install?

All installs are different and not limited to pre-packaged systems. We custom design our systems to suit each premise and application.

Please call us or send us an e-mail and we can give you some approximate costing. For exact costing and installation requirements, a mandatory site visit is required.
